How to Look After Your Indoor Plants

Watering

Due to the unique nature of each plant, there is no universal rule for watering frequency. However, it is crucial to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to rotting and irreversible damage. Generally, plants require more frequent watering in the summer and less in the colder seasons. Detailed instructions on your plant's watering needs can be found in its care card.

How can I tell when my plants are thirsty?

To prevent your plants from showing signs of dehydration too late, it is advisable to regularly check the soil moisture. Simply press your finger into the top 1-2 inches of soil. If it feels dry, water the plant. If it's still moist, wait a few days before watering again.

What's the best way to water my plant?

To prevent water from spilling on your surfaces, place your plant in the sink or shower for watering. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to drain before wiping the pot's bottom. For a hanging plant, let it hang over the sink for 15-20 minutes to air dry.

Light

How much light does my plant need?

Just like watering, the lighting requirements for your plant will vary based on its species. Pothos plants are not demanding and can thrive in low-light environments just as effectively as they can in areas with abundant sunlight. However, pachira money trees, aloe vera, and pineapple plants prefer sunny spots as they are true sun-loving species.

What plants like shade?

Don't fret if your house lacks natural light. You can still appreciate the vibrancy indoor plants offer, as many thrive in shady areas. Boston ferns, monstera, rubber plants, peace lilies, and snake plants are all suitable for low-light environments.

What’s the difference between direct, high, medium and low light?

Light sources can be categorized into three main groups: low light, medium light, and high/direct light. Low light conditions are typically found in rooms facing north, with small windows, or shaded by trees. Medium light is often provided by a large or east-facing window, or in rooms that receive ample natural light throughout the day, making it a preferred choice for many plants. High light refers to direct sunlight streaming through windows and reaching plants for at least 5-6 hours daily, making it ideal for cacti, succulents, and other tropical plants that thrive in heat!

Soil & Food

What’s the best soil for indoor plants?

As your collection of plants expands, you will realize that soil requirements vary. Succulents thrive in a coarse, well-drained soil, while ferns prefer soil rich in humus (decomposed leaves). An ideal indoor soil mix typically includes peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite for their moisture-absorbing properties and density. However, since they tend to dry out rapidly, it is essential to monitor the soil regularly and water as needed every few days.

How often do I need to feed my indoor plants?

During the spring and summer months, it is advisable to provide your plants with fertilizer as this is the period when they experience the most growth. It is recommended to fertilize your plants every two weeks throughout this time.

How do I prepare soil for planting?

It is crucial to maximize the preparation of your soil to benefit your plants. Enhance the soil by applying organic compost and mulch for added nutrients. Prior to planting, ensure to water the soil to promote healthy root growth for your plants.
